Step 1: get your page count to a multiple of four
A saddle-stitch booklet is built from sheets, and each sheet folded in half creates four printed pages — two on the front, two on the back. That means your total page count has to divide evenly by four. If your source PDF has 10 pages, you need 12; add two blank pages at the end before you do anything else.
Skipping this step is the single most common reason booklets come out wrong. Content quietly shifts by one page relative to where you expect it, and the last real page ends up printed on the inside of a spread instead of the back cover.

Step 2: understand printer spreads vs reader spreads
A reader spread is what you see on screen: page 2 next to page 3, in numeric order. A printer spread is what has to be on the physical sheet so that after folding and stapling, the pages read in order. For an 8-page booklet, the printer spreads are page 8 next to page 1, page 2 next to page 7, page 6 next to page 3, and page 4 next to page 5.
This pairing is not arbitrary. It comes directly from folding a nested stack of sheets in half: the outermost sheet carries the first and last page, and each sheet nested inside it carries a pair of pages one step closer to the middle.
Step 3: set duplex printing to flip on the short edge
Once pages are in printer-spread order, the physical print settings matter as much as the page order. Set your printer to duplex (double-sided) and choose "flip on short edge," sometimes labeled "tumble." This makes the back of each sheet land right-side-up when the sheet is folded in half.
If you leave duplex set to "flip on long edge" — the default for most office documents — the back side of every sheet will print upside down relative to the front once folded. That is one of the two most common causes of a booklet that reads correctly on one side and upside-down on the other.
Step 4: choose the right paper
For a home or office booklet, standard 80-100 gsm paper works fine up to about 16 pages. Past that, heavier stock (115-130 gsm) holds up better to folding and repeated handling, but adds more creep — the inward push of inner pages caused by nested sheet thickness — so leave extra inner margin on longer booklets. Cover stock, if you are using a heavier sheet for the front and back, should be fed as a separate sheet in most home printers rather than run through the same duplex pass as the interior pages, since mixed weights in one tray can jam or misfeed.
Paper grain direction also matters for anything printed commercially. Sheets folded with the grain (grain running parallel to the spine) crease cleanly; folded against the grain, pages crack along the fold and lie less flat. Most office and home printer paper is not labeled with grain direction, so this mainly applies once you are ordering stock from a print shop rather than pulling from a desktop paper tray.
Step 5: fold and staple
Once printed, jog the stack so the edges are flush, fold the whole set in half along the center line in one motion, and crease firmly. Open it flat and staple through the fold at two points, roughly a quarter and three-quarters of the way down the spine. A long-reach or saddle stapler makes this far more reliable than a standard desktop stapler once you pass 12-16 pages, since the fold thickness pushes the staple crown out of alignment on thinner tools.

Choosing a finished booklet size
Most booklets are built from standard letter or A4 sheets folded in half, which produces a half-letter (5.5 by 8.5 inch) or A5 finished page. That is the default because it needs no special paper cutting and fits standard printer trays. If you need a larger finished page, start from tabloid (11 by 17 inch) or A3 sheets, which fold down to letter or A4-sized pages.
Whatever source size you choose, keep your PDF's page size consistent with the sheet you plan to fold, and set your imposition tool's output paper size to match the sheet, not the finished page.
